Non-Believers Dig Digg
by Ron Gold on Nov.08, 2008, under LOL, Religulous
It turns out that social media websitse like Digg do very well among atheists and agnostics:
But you won’t find many links to Bible studies on the front page of Digg — unless it’s about the absurdity of taking Scripture literally. A 2-year-old survey of Digg users showed a significant concentration of atheists and agnostics. Because Digg’s content is submitted and voted on by the users, the stories promoted to the website’s homepage reflect the audience.
Although [Digg user Andrew] Barker reads Digg regularly, he doesn’t submit links very often. But he had a big hit with a picture he posted of a child’s coloring book showing Jesus riding a dinosaur. “I found it, and thought, ‘God, that’s such a hilarious image,’” Barker said. “Digg takes everything religious so lightheartedly.”
Poking fun at evangelical Christians, Catholics, creationists, the image of Jesus Christ and, well, anything remotely associated with religion is commonplace on the website. An image, titled “The Incredible Jesuc Car: I’m Afraid Of Americans,” was voted to the Digg homepage a few days ago. The photo shows a Toyota, with the license plate “Jesuc,” blanketed in bumper stickers promoting Christianity, the Republican presidential ticket and anti-gay marriage propositions.
Misinterpreting Atheism
by Ron Gold on Oct.27, 2008, under Religulous
If you don’t mind getting frustrated and want to see how “new atheism” can be misinterpreted, read this essay by Clifford Goldstein in Liberty Magazine. Here’s his introduction:
Picture this dystopia: in the name of rationality, reason, and science—religion is severely pro-scribed. Some religious beliefs— beliefs —deemed so dangerous that those holding them should be killed. The concept of religious “tolerance” would also be anathema: persons would not be allowed to hold whatever religious beliefs they chose—this cannot be for beliefs deemed irrational. And parents could be charged with “child abuse” for giving their offspring a religious education.
It all sounds like something from the failed social experiments of the Soviet Union, the Eastern bloc countries, and other now defunct Marxist regimes, perhaps?
Perhaps. Yet that kind of society would be the logical outgrowth of views promoted by an elitist clique of atheist writers, philosophers, scientists, and scholars. Dr. Richard Dawkins, Daniel C. Dennett, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris are at the forefront of what’s been dubbed “the new atheism,” a take-no-prisoners, shock-and-awe assault on any theism at all. Richard Dawkins wrote: “I am not attacking any particular version of God or gods. I am attacking God, all gods, anything and everything super-natural, wherever and whenever they have been or will be invented.”
Maybe Goldstein read the books of the authors that he attacks, but he certainly didn’t understand them.
“The God Delusion” Makes A Family Guy Cameo
by Ron Gold on Sep.29, 2008, under Religulous
You can tell that all of the recent books about atheism have gone mainstream when an immature scatological fest like Family Guy uses Richard Dawkin’s The God Delusion in the plot of it’s newest episode. It turns out that Brian the dog is an atheist (or as religious people might say, this just reaffirms that animals don’t have souls.) He meets a girl while buying The God Delusion, and several bad atheism puns ensue. You can watch the full episode here if you’re interested.

City Council Blocks Atheist Websites
by Ron Gold on Jul.30, 2008, under Fresh News, Religulous
In England, the Birmingham City Council has banned their staff from looking at atheist web sites, as well as “sites that promote witchcraft, the paranormal, sexual deviancy and criminal activity.” They are hoping to filter out these allegedly undesirable sites:
The authority’s Bluecoat WebFilter computer system allows staff to look at websites relating to Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and other religions but blocks sites to do with “witchcraft or Satanism” and “occult practices, atheistic views, voodoo rituals or any other form of mysticism”.
