My “Bill Gates is God” Rant

I LOVE DRAMA! I woke up Friday and MS Windows Update had done a periodic ‘update’ and rebooted my system. (I have the setting turned OFF in Vista…trust me, it’s been an ongoing issue, and I’ve looked into it.) MS Vista doesn’t understand it’s own settings! Most of my companion software seems to be smarter than the OS is though…and I’ve always been fine and never lost data. It never irritated me to the point of calling Microsoft because I never lost data and I figured it was better to have the update finished anyway. And I’m not calling foul on Microsoft, but my history of trying to solve the issue twice, led me to the same setting. I’ve had other history with Microsoft software and owned a custom PC computer business for a while; so I’m no rookie. …But again, I was fine with this flaw and just dealt with it. So back to Friday…I re-logged into Vista and opened my browser and after about 5 minutes of use all software froze…but my mouse still worked! This is a huge red flag for hard drive failure and sure enough…my drive had taken a dump! Worse, I was working on a few things and hadn’t backed up my data in a week or so…and some folders hadn’t been backed up in months. Big no-no. I’m not saying that the shut-down or the ‘update’ broke my drive…just considering that if their software has flaws, then you can’t look past that possibility? I like to make sure that everything is shut-down properly; and have witnessed this unscheduled ‘update’ in the past and seen that it is rather abrupt, never allowing the individual programs to close properly. I know that many people blur the line between software and hardware issues, or they just think the line is very thin. I know it is not, and think it was just my hard-drives ‘time to go’…hope it made it to heaven…I should ask God AKA Bill Gates? It had a short life…on to a new incarnation I guess? But after years of Mr. Gates milking us for his sainthood…I’m about ready to make that switch everyone seems to be making. Dare I say Macintosh?? …Wish that I could, but I needed a quick fix…and have you seen PC prices lately? Haha… No wonder Bill has my nuts in a vice! Just need to get used to using this new Online File Folder to make sure my shit is safe.

Damn, that really sucks. I know I tempt the fates all the time by my lack of backups, and I know God/Gates will punish me sooner or later. I could never prove it, but I’m guessing Vista had a hand in this.
Best of luck in recovering anything.
