Advocate Of Pledge’s “Under God” Addition Dies

by Ron Gold on Nov.29, 2008, under Religulous

The Rev. George M. Docherty, who is credited with convincing Congress to add “under God” into the Pledge of Allegiance through a famous sermon, died on Thursday from heart problems at the age of 97. Some people might consider Docherty to be a hero, but I think he was a red-baiter with backwards priorities:

Rev. Docherty’s inspiration for the sermon came from his son’s schoolroom experience of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, which was written in 1892 by Baptist minister Francis Bellamy. When Rev. Docherty realized that it had no reference to God, he later said, “I had found my sermon.”

Without mentioning a deity, Rev. Docherty said, the pledge could just as easily apply to the communist Soviet Union: “I could hear little Muscovites recite a similar pledge to their hammer-and-sickle flag with equal solemnity.”

Muslims Can Do Yoga Again

by Ron Gold on Nov.28, 2008, under Religulous

Islamic hardliners in Malaysia were forced to back down from their condemnation of yoga after they outraged the public:

Malaysia’s leader assured Muslims on Wednesday they can perform yoga if they do not chant religious mantras — an apparent effort to assuage public anger over an Islamic body’s ban of the ancient Indian exercise.

Last week, the National Fatwa Council said that elements of Hinduism in the practice could corrupt Muslims. Many ordinary Muslims responded by saying they had been performing yoga for years without losing their faith.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi told the Bernama news agency that Muslims who were interested in the health benefits of yoga could continue practicing as long as they do not chant.

Not that this is any great accomplishment; the Fatwa Council would probably like to severely punish anyone who performs yoga chants.

Sect Matures From Bomb Shelter To Facebook

by Ron Gold on Nov.26, 2008, under Religulous

In March of 1990, members of the infamous Church Universal and Triumphant religious sect were anxiously awaiting what they believed was the impending Armageddon. So they nestled into their bomb shelter, which they packed with assault rifles and armored vehicles, and waited. Luckily for everyone, they were way off. Rather that dissolve, the sect did what any struggling organization would do: they rebranded. They exist today by dropping the apocalyptic gun-nut routine and adopting a capitalistic, New Age persona:

Scrambling to stay current as it reaches its 50th anniversary, the church has transformed itself into a New Age publishing enterprise and spiritual university. But still in the background is its “insurance” against the end — the shelter buried beneath a hillside on the sect’s 7,500 acre Royal Teton Ranch.

There, more than 20 feet underground, 22,000 hours of video and audio recordings of Prophet survive. They’re stacked alongside periodically rotated, floor-to-ceiling crates of canned fish, dried meats, grains and cooking oils.

Time for real change?

by DSTroy on Nov.25, 2008, under Extra...

Michigan voters said yes to medical marijuana by a ratio of nearly 2-1. … Michigan is the 13th state to allow medical use of marijuana. … Massachusetts voters on Nov. 4 approved the first statewide measure to decriminalize marijuana … Rob Kampia, executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project … said the efforts in Michigan and in Massachusetts demonstrate a “sea change” in public attitudes … “Last year an American was arrested on marijuana charges once every 36 seconds, which is more arrests for marijuana possession alone than for all violent crimes combined.” Kampia said in a press release. “Voters have loudly said, ‘Enough!’ … “Marijuana prohibition is about to take its place next to alcohol Prohibition on the ash heap of history.”

The Chocolaty Immaculate Conception

by Ron Gold on Nov.25, 2008, under Religulous

A German man conceived of a great idea when he decided to manufacture delicious chocolate Jesuses, and the product is now becoming a hit:

“I started thinking about how I could reintroduce traditional religious values into this commercial world,” said Oynhausen, who had been unemployed since losing a recycling business two years ago.

Together with a friend, a local chocolatier, Oynhausen, 54, developed the concept of “Sweet Lord.” It is growing fast in his home town of Duisburg and on the Internet.

Oynhausen said thousands of people have put in orders for the figures wrapped in gold foil.

Orthodox Jews Need Snitches

by Ron Gold on Nov.24, 2008, under Religulous

Roman Catholics aren’t the only religion with a child molestation problem. It’s been revealed on a New York city radio show that this has also been a problem in the Orthodox Jewish community:

It started as a radio program discussion about a taboo subject: child molestation among members of the insular world of Orthodox Jews.

Since he broached the subject on his radio show this summer, says a state assemblyman, dozens of people have come forward with stories about children being molested in the Orthodox community, which strictly follows Jewish law.

Dov Hikind says as many as four people a day have come to him over the past three months with painful accounts of secrets often kept for decades, accusing more than 60 individuals.

Man shot, killed at Scientology in LA

by DSTroy on Nov.24, 2008, under Fresh News, Religulous

I don’t believe one word that comes from a scientologists mouth, so when I heard this story, I had to read it; I plan to look for more about this story now that I have…

A security guard shot and killed a man wielding two Samurai swords Sunday on the grounds of a Scientology building in Hollywood, police said. The unidentified man approached three guards around noon in the parking lot of the Scientology Celebrity Centre, Los Angeles Deputy Police Chief Terry S. Hara said.

Here is when it gets sketchy and makes me question????

Biblical Musical: “Cannibalism, Rape, A Bear That Mauls Children”

by Ron Gold on Nov.23, 2008, under Religulous

There’s a lot of twisted shit in the Bible, especially the Old Testament, although a lot of the best stuff is quite obscure. Fortunately, a college musical will be highlighting some of the little known but highly disturbing stories of the Bible:

Don’t expect to hear these Bible stories at church.

Cannibalism, rape, a bear that mauls children — this is the Bible?

They’re among six stories from the Old Testament acted out in “Terror Texts,” a musical at Northwestern College in Orange City.

Defying All Reason, Faith-Healing Deaths Continue

by Ron Gold on Nov.23, 2008, under Religulous

One of the most tragic consequences of faith is when a kid dies due to negligent parents who substitute faith-healing for medicine. What’s worse, in most states the parents can’t even be held legally responsible:

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, at least 30 states have specific exemption laws on the books.

What does federal law say? According to HHS, nothing in the amendments to the original 1974 Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act, can “be construed as establishing a federal requirement that a parent or legal guardian provide any medical service or treatment that is against the religious beliefs of the parent or legal guardian.”

Five states have repealed exemption laws, [faith healing critic] Swan said: Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nebraska and North Carolina.

Some states have revised their laws, including Oregon in 1999. After a stormy debate in the Oregon Legislature, then-Gov. John Kitzhaber — a doctor — signed a compromise bill into law that eliminated the Oregon spiritual healing exemption in some manslaughter and criminal mistreatment cases.

Look at this! It’s called The Ape That Spoke and its a love poem for evolution. Talks about all kinds of stupid junk like how people are retard babes from monkeys having sex. We have laws about obsense and seems like they dont apply to when librals brake them. It’s really kind of sad. This is what keeps us in a world that God cant be proud of. Why do we “tolerate” this kind of rubish?

Anyone else noticed how this kind of race bating against Good Christians has gone up since they let that immigrant muslim win THAT MEANS STEAL the election? Guy doesnt ven have a birth cirtificate and hes president and already hes stirring up all the other radicals.

Angelina Jolie, The Virgin Mary, And Wal-Mart

by Ron Gold on Nov.21, 2008, under Religulous

I was digging through some old files on my hard drive, and came across this gem:
If you can’t tell, this is a painting that depicts Angelina Jolie as the Virgin Mary inside a Wal-Mart. It was made almost two years ago by artist Kate Kretz, and is tackily titled “Blessed Art Thou.” I’m no art expert, but I’m a connoisseur of the sacrilegious, and I heartily approve of this painting.
