False Sense of Maturity

Mohammad’s Next Movie

by Ron Gold on Oct.29, 2008, under Religulous

It seems like a risky proposition, but a Mohammad movie is in the works:

A movie drama about the life of the Prophet Mohammad is to go into production soon, and will be only the second English-language film of its kind ever made, its producers said on Monday.

“The Messenger of Peace” will be a remake of Moustapha Akkad’s “The Message,” a 1977 Hollywood classic starring Anthony Quinn which is often applauded by Muslims as an example of how commercial Western cinema can respect Islam.

. . .

In the original “Message,” the Prophet and his companions were heard speaking off-camera but never directly shown, in accordance with Muslim conventions forbidding their visual depiction.

I’ve never seen the original, so I’m not exactly sure how they pulled off never directly showing Mohammad. I would guess that they won’t show him this time either, considering how fearful people can be of Islamic terrorists. And with a name like The Messenger of Peace, it’s probably very pro-Mohammad.

My biggest question is whether it will try to be historically accurate, or try to be consistent with the Qur’an. It can’t be both, unless you think Mohammad actually flew to heaven on a winged horse.
